眼下，2016 年美國大選正在火熱進行中。在民主黨中，美國前國務卿希拉里一家獨大，即使在與另一名競選者傑布·布什的競爭中也領先了至少 10 個百分點。而在共和黨中，代表佛羅里達州的聯邦參議員馬可 ·盧比奧、德克薩斯州的參議員泰德·克魯茲和肯德基州的參議員蘭德·保羅，曾在惠普擔任首席執行官的菲奧莉娜以及億萬富翁的房地產商唐納德·特朗普相繼宣佈參選，似乎必有一場混戰。</p>
<p>
而在他們之外，人們也把目光投向了另一個商業明星——一個總是對社會問題提出自己的看法、並且不耽於在媒體上撰文表態的星巴克 CEO 霍華德·舒爾茨。不過，就在上週，舒爾茨在《紐約時報》一篇署名文章中表示，自己並沒有意願競選 2016 年美國總統。</p>
<p>
這樣說來，至少是目前，這個肩負着 30 萬名員工生計的 CEO 對政壇的興趣並沒有蓋過“賣咖啡”。但另一方面，民衆對這個億萬富翁抱有的競選期待也並非是空穴來風。</p>
<p>
時間回到 2011 年，面對兩黨間的惡性競爭，舒爾茨多次呼籲抵制政治捐款，認爲內部競爭最終消耗的還是美國社會。2012 年，他發起了名爲“Indivisible” (不可分割)運動，推出了一款售價 15 美元的同名咖啡，並承諾將其中的 5 美元捐給他在 2001 年創立的“爲美國創造就業”基金( Create Jobs for USA )。</p>

“我們不能再等華盛頓做決定了，我們要讓美國人知道，企業也能發揮作用。”舒爾茨在接受美國哥倫比亞廣播公司的採訪時說道。</p>

今年，星巴克又跟紐約市警察局長布拉登合作了一個緩和種族關係的活動，名爲“ Race Together”。除了將“種族團結”的貼紙貼在了咖啡杯上，星巴克還要求店員向顧客發放這些貼紙。不過這一次，媒體對星巴克和舒爾茨的態度並不友好。媒體紛紛指責星巴克以這樣一個輕鬆的方式來涉足這個嚴肅的社會問題，多少有些不自量力。但舒爾茨本人似乎並不介意。在星巴克內部，他舉辦了大大小小數十次討論會，邀請各級員工就自己遭受到的種族歧視經歷敞開心扉。是否獲得讚賞並不重要，重要的是引發人們對於種族問題的關注和討論。</p>
<p>
星巴克對美國政治和社會的關注可能更多的是舒爾茨的個人意願，而他所執掌的星巴克在實現了他個人意願的同時，也被認爲是一個有所擔當的餐飲公司。</p>
<p>
2008 年，美國深陷次貸危機，星巴克的日子也不好過。一方面，由於它在之前一味追求門店數量，輕視管理，業績出現了下跌。在 2008 年第四季度，公司淨利潤大幅下降 97%，股價下跌 40%。另一方面，7-11、麥當勞和 Taco Bell 也通過豐富旗下咖啡產品線與它產生了直接競爭。而在這時，從 2000 年起開始擔任董事會主席的舒爾茨也重回 CEO 的位置，上任後，舒爾茨關閉了占星巴克當時門店數 20% 的 600 家門店。在 2009 年第三季度，星巴克就迎來了盈利增長。</p>
<p>
但即使在那時，星巴克還是做了一些幫助社會發展的舉動。2008 年前後，它開設了爲小企業提供貸款的服務，依靠 1997 年成立的星巴克基金會 Starbucks Foundation 和客戶資助作爲資金流。2009 年，星巴克加入到與美國最受歡迎的 401k 養老金儲蓄計劃額度匹配的 401k 退休金計劃，成爲衆多加大對養老金投入企業中的一員。</p>
<p>
而在近 1 -2 年，在良好業績的支撐下，星巴克對於社會建設的投入更加頻繁。2014 年，它通過星巴克基金會向退伍軍人捐贈了 3000 萬美元，而舒爾茨也和前《華盛頓郵報》駐伊拉克記者 Rajiv Chandrasekaran 合著了一本描寫退伍老兵的書《For Love of Country 》。之後，它推出了歷時十年的“星巴克大學計劃”(Starbucks College Achievement Plan)，爲員工補貼學費以便支持他們取得學位。今年，星巴克更是聯絡了數家美國公司，向 16 - 24 歲的少數族裔年輕人提供 10 萬個就業機會。舒爾茨承諾，星巴克將僱傭 1 萬名既沒有上學也沒有工作的年輕人，並且在密蘇里州弗格森等地的貧困社區開店。</p>
<p>
作爲一家上市公司，星巴克要向華爾街負責，而良好的公司形象也適時地幫助它建立了一個不錯的品牌，鋪下了長線投資。而這背後，其實也很大程度上和舒爾茨的個人經歷相關。</p>
<p>
1953 年出生在紐約布魯克林一幢公屋裏的舒爾茨是家族中唯一一個上大學的人。經過年輕時辛苦生活的洗禮，舒爾茨對普通民衆在底層打拼的生活有着比較切實的理解。</p>

在從一名去星巴克推銷滴濾咖啡壺的漢馬普拉斯百貨地區經理到跳槽星巴克，再從離開公司到領導星巴克，並且將它從 2008 年的泥潭中救起來。舒爾茨的個人經歷被冠上了不少勵志的名頭。</p>
<p>
在 2012 年美國獨立日前後，舒爾茨也發表了一份公開信，稱自己就是美國夢。這其中當然有不少宣傳公關的成分，好的品牌形象是一家公司能否成功至關重要的一環，這個道理不言自明。但不可否認的是，舒爾茨的經歷是真實具體的，而這些經驗也讓星巴克成爲了現在的樣子。</p>
<p>
截止到 2014 年，星巴克在全美擁有的門店數已經達到了 11962 家，甚至超過了它全球其它市場總數的 9404 家。而在營收方面，它在 2014 全年四季度保持了全球市場 6% 以上的增長。 2015 財年剛剛過去的第三季度它更是實現了 23 年來最出色的一個季度。</p>
<p>
“雖然我們已經建立了一個優秀的品牌，並通過它向包括兼職在內的員工提供醫療、教育和股權扶持，但作爲一家公共公司，我們能做的還有更多。”舒爾茨在《紐約時報》這樣澄清自己拒絕參選的想法。</p>
<p>
事實上，從商業回溯政壇，這其中所包含的力量在某種程度上比一個就政治而論政治的人來的更大。眼下的舒爾茨志不在白宮，但不可否認的是，如今它帶領星巴克的所做所爲，也許會在未來成爲潛力巨大的政治資本。</p>
